Mini Czech Lesson #2: Kolik je hodin?

When talking about time, we have to pay attention to:

• Verb “to be” (je nebo jsou)

• The form of the noun “hodina”

✅ Jak to funguje?

Czech is special — numbers change the word that follows them. So when you say the time, you have to change both the verb and the noun:

🔵 1 hodina

• používáme JE + hodina

• např. Je jedna hodina.

🕐 This is singular, so we use the singular verb and noun.

🟢 2, 3, 4 hodiny

• používáme JSOU + hodiny

• např. Jsou tři hodiny.

🕓 Plural form, but only for numbers 2, 3, and 4

🔴 5 a více hodin

• používáme JE + hodin

• např. Je sedm hodin.

🕖 Even though it's plural the verb goes back to je, and we use hodin (a genitive plural form).

⚠️ Pozor:
Neříkáme “Jsou pět hodin ❌” — to je častá chyba!
